Although now a local staple in the community, way back in 1994, when co-owner Mary Wellman began investigating new opportunities, University Avenue in Clive was uncharted territory. Mary and husband Dave Tasler looked at various options before settling on their current location at 13435 University, one of which was near railroad tracks in Clive. That got them thinking, and with the Country Club housing development right next door, the theme seemed to fit, and the "Club Car" was born.
Wellman, who previously co-owned Wellman's Pub on Ingersoll in Des Moines, didn't grow up in the restaurant business. She jumped in during college, when she was hired as the manager of a pizza place called Jimmy's. Wellman admits after that, she "never looked back." After Jimmy's, she worked at Garcia's for seven years, then went into business with her brothers before establishing The Club Car in 1996.
While great food and service may be the "primary products" of The Club Car, the casual atmosphere also elicits captivation from the moment you walk in the front door. Railroad memorabilia, original framed posters, model train cars, and signs from "way back" always draw attention. Dave Tasler admits during the original construction process, a fully-operational train was slated to go around the entire restaurant and lounge. "After we put together the plans, it just didn't make sense. It would've been neat, but we feel the atmosphere and decor compliment the theme very well."
